A time to tear, and a time to sew; A time to keep silence, and a time to speak; (Ecclesiastes 3:7 NKJV)

• A MEANINGFUL SILENCE IS BETTER THAN MEANINGLESS WORDS!

The Wisdom of Silence

1. SILENCE SPEAKS WHEN YOU DON’T LISTEN.

The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded than the shouts of a ruler of fools. (Ecclesiastes 9:17 NIV)

• SILENCE DEMONSTRATES MERCY.

2. SILENCE IS THE SUPER-NATURAL VOICE OF SELF-CONTROL.

In a multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise. (Proverbs 10:19 NKJV)

Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding. (Proverbs 17:28 KJV)

3. AVOID THE SIN OF SILENCE, DURING BLATANT SHOUTS OF UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.

When I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life, that same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. Yet, if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered your soul. (Ezekiel 3:18-19 NKJV)

Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. (Colossians 4:5-6 NKJV)

Life Group Discussion:

1. Have you ever been given the “silent treatment?” What did that teach you?

2. Has God ever gone “silent” in your life? What does the silence of God reveal in your life?

3. How does silence prove the Holy Spirit fruit of self-control? Do you have self-control? If not, is there a lack in the Holy Spirit or is there a lack in something else?

4. Have you been silent about a sin in yourself and/or others? Why is that silence a sin in itself?
